Case IH 5002 - UCM – UCM: Rear PTO brake output – short circuit to 12V
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit driving the Rear Power Take-Off (PTO) brake solenoid is receiving unintended 12-volt power. This is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting to a 12V source, an internally shorted solenoid, or a failure within the control module itself keeping the circuit energized.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the Rear PTO Brake Solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points where the wire could be shorting to a 12V power wire.
Disconnect the solenoid and check the connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit.
With the key ON (engine off) and the solenoid disconnected, probe the signal wire at the solenoid connector. If it reads 12V when the PTO brake is not being commanded, there is a short to power in the harness or a stuck driver in the UCM.
Test the solenoid itself for an internal short circuit. Compare the resistance reading against OEM specifications.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage during repair.
Locate the Component
Locate the Rear PTO Brake Solenoid on the transmission valve block.
Isolate the Short
If your diagnostic checks revealed 12V on the signal wire, trace the harness back to the UCM. Repair or splice the damaged section of the wiring harness where the short to 12V is occurring.
Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the wiring tests perfectly but the solenoid is internally shorted (or mechanically stuck on), remove the retaining nut/bolt, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem, and install the new solenoid.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Turn the key on, clear the UCM fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu (H-Menu) or a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and cycle the Rear PTO to ensure the brake engages and disengages properly without throwing the 5002 code again.
