Case IH 5003 – Electronic Management Unit (EMU) or Transmission/PTO controller: Rear PTO brake output - open circuit

Issue description

Indicates an open circuit or a short circuit to ground in the rear PTO brake solenoid circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the system: Turn the keystart OFF, ensure FWD and Differential lock are disengaged, set PTO brake switch to applied, and set PTO engagement switches to disengaged. Turn keystart ON to see if the error returns

  2. Inspect the wiring harness: Locate the Rear PTO Brake Solenoid connector (X277 or X278 depending on model)

  3. Check circuit continuity: Test the specific wires for an open circuit (e.g., wire 2130 for power and wire 57 for ground)

  4. Test the solenoid coil: Disconnect the solenoid and measure the resistance across its pins with a multimeter to determine if the internal coil has failed (open circuit)

  5. Check the brake switch: Verify the integrity of the PTO brake switch itself, as related codes (like 5005) indicate brake switch open circuits

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Ensure all PTO switches are in the OFF/disengaged position.

  2. Locate solenoid

    Locate the Rear PTO Brake Solenoid. On many models (like the Puma), it is located on the rear right-hand top of the transmission.

  3. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector (X277/X278) from the solenoid.

  4. Inspect connector

    Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture. Clean or repair the connector if necessary.

  5. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire in the harness (wire 2130 or 57), repair the open circuit using OEM-approved wiring repair methods.

  6. Remove solenoid hardware

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil tested open, remove the retaining nut/bolt securing the Rear PTO Brake Solenoid to the transmission valve block.

  7. Replace solenoid

    Remove the faulty solenoid and install the replacement part.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Verify repair

    Turn the keystart to the ON position and verify that fault code 5003 has cleared from the display.
