Case IH 5003 - UCM – UCM: Rear PTO brake output – open circuit or short circuit to ground
Issue description
The control module is not detecting the expected electrical continuity from the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) brake solenoid circuit. The circuit is either broken/disconnected (open circuit) or a wire is chafed and touching the machine's chassis (short circuit to ground).
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series (140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
- Maxxum / MX Series
- MXM Series (e.g., MXM190)
- JX Series
Check the cause
Harness and Connector Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO brake solenoid. Look for disconnected plugs, corroded pins, or wires that have rubbed through against the chassis.
Multimeter Testing: Test the circuit for continuity to ensure there is no break in the wiring (open circuit) and test for continuity to ground to rule out a short.
Controller Diagnostics: Use the tractor's "H Menu" navigation procedure. By connecting special diagnostic tool 380000843 to the diagnostic connector and turning the key ON, you can access the UCM controller's EEPROM to view active states and clear stored codes.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the engine and ensure that all pressure is completely relieved from the hydraulic circuits before attempting to remove any caps, covers, or valves.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the Rear PTO brake solenoid on the transmission/PTO hydraulic valve block.
Disconnect and Isolate
Unplug the electrical connector from the PTO brake solenoid.
Test the Solenoid
Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil itself. If the coil is internally shorted or open, the solenoid must be replaced.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid is faulty, remove the retaining hardware and slide the old solenoid off the valve stem (or unthread the cartridge valve, depending on the specific valve block design).
Install the New Part
Install the replacement OEM solenoid, ensuring it is seated correctly, and reconnect the wiring harness.
Clear Codes and Test
Re-enter the "H Menu" to clear the fault code, start the tractor, and test the PTO brake engagement to ensure the code does not return.
