Case IH 5005 – CCH (Cab Controller Hub): Rear PTO, PTO remote fender switch short (CCH Only)

The tractor's control system has detected a short circuit in the external PTO control switch located on the rear fender. This usually means the switch has failed internally, the wiring is shorted to a 12V power source, or the wires are shorted together. When this code is active, the external PTO controls are disabled for safety.

   Inspect the rear fender PTO switch for physical damage, cracked housing, or water/debris ingress

   Trace the wiring harness from the fender switch back to the main cab harness. Look for chafed wires, pinched lines, or rodent damage

   Disconnect the switch and inspect the connector. Ensure no pins are pushed back, bent, or corroded

   Test the switch for internal continuity to see if it is stuck closed/shorted. Check the harness side for an improper 12V presence or continuity to ground on the signal wire

   Verify that the short circuit has not blown any related fuses in the cab fuse panel

   Park and disconnect battery

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate switch

   Locate the faulty remote PTO switch on the rear fender.

   Disconnect harness

   Reach behind the fender panel and disconnect the wiring harness connector from the switch.

   Repair wiring harness

   If the wiring harness is damaged (e.g., chewed by rodents), cut out the damaged section, splice in new wire using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-wrap the harness in protective loom.

   Remove failed switch

   If the wiring is intact, the switch itself has failed. Remove the switch from the fender housing. Depending on the model, it is held in place by a retaining nut or a switch clamp behind the fender.

   Install new switch

   Insert the new OEM PTO fender switch into the mounting hole and secure it with the clamp/nut.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the connector clicks firmly into place and the weather seal is seated.

   Reconnect battery and clear codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the inactive fault codes from the display.

   Test switch

   Test the fender switch to confirm the PTO engages and disengages properly without throwing the 5005 code.
