Case IH 5006 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Rear PTO Management / Chassis Controller: Rear PTO solenoid – short circuit to 12V
Issue description
The control module is detecting battery voltage on the ground/control side of the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid circuit when it should not be present, indicating either a wiring harness short to a 12V power source or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the solenoid valve power supply harness for a 12V short circuit. Look for chafed, pinched, or melted wire insulation, specifically on wires designated for the PTO solenoid (OR 2042 PTO SOLENOID-REAR and OR 2051 PTO SOLENOID RETURN).
Inspect the electrical connector at the solenoid (X278, X279, or X-159) for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.
Perform a coil resistance test: disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid pins. If resistance is near zero ohms, the coil is internally shorted to voltage.

Preparation
Turn off the tractor, ensure the PTO is fully disengaged, and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical shorts.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the Rear PTO Solenoid Valve. On Puma and T7 models, it is typically located on the rear left-hand top of the transmission housing.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector (X278/X279) from the solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid
Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining hardware (bolts/nuts) holding the solenoid block in place and extract the valve.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Carefully insert the new valve into the port and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Reassemble
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid. Reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Start the tractor and clear the inactive fault codes. Engage the PTO to initiate the automatic PTO calibration. The system will automatically calibrate the quick-fill and engagement values (typical successful calibration values will read between 100 to 420 on the diagnostic display).
