5007

Case IH 5007 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Armrest / Cab Controller (ATC): Rear PTO Solenoid - Stuck off

Issue description

The controller is commanding the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) to engage, but the solenoid is failing to actuate. This is typically caused by a circuit shorted to ground, an open circuit, a failed solenoid coil, an internal control module failure, or a stuck PTO remote fender switch.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the rear fender PTO switches (if equipped) are not physically stuck or packed with debris, which can trigger a logic error.

  2. Disconnect the main harness connector leading to the PTO solenoid and measure the resistance across the circuit pins to test the solenoid circuit.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector directly at the PTO solenoid and measure the resistance of the solenoid coil. A healthy coil should measure between 6.0 and 6.8 ohms at 25°C (77°F - 100°F).

  4. Test for continuity between the solenoid power wire and the tractor chassis (ground) to check for shorts. If continuity exists, trace the wiring harness for rubbed or melted insulation.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the hand brake (or engage ParkLock), and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

The Rear PTO Solenoid is typically located on the top side or the rear left-hand top of the transmission housing.

  3. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve to prevent dirt and debris from falling into the transmission/hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the PTO solenoid.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid valve cartridge in the transmission housing. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission oil. Insert it into the housing and torque the retaining fastener to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the 2-pin electrical connector back in.

  8. Calibration

On many Case IH models (like the Puma and Magnum), replacing the PTO solenoid valve requires you to perform a PTO Calibration procedure via the cab monitor or H-Menu to ensure proper clutch engagement pressures.

Parts you might need
