Case IH 5008 – ATC (Armrest Tractor Controller) or CCM (Chassis Control Module): Rear Power Take-Off (RPTO) control circuit issue

Issue description

Indicates a critical electrical issue within the Rear Power Take-Off (RPTO) control circuit, which can be caused by a Rear PTO solenoid circuit overcurrent (short to ground), a switch short/conflict, or an open circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Rear PTO cab switches and remote fender-mounted PTO switches to ensure they are not physically stuck, damaged, or packed with debris (diagnoses switch short/conflict cause).

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the ATC/CCM to the Rear PTO solenoid. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or bare spots rubbing against the tractor chassis (diagnoses short to ground cause).

  3. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector at the RPTO solenoid (wire numbers 2042 and 2051) and check for corrosion, water ingress, or melted pins.

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the Rear PTO solenoid. A reading of near 0 ohms indicates the solenoid coil has failed and shorted internally.

Repair steps

  1. Park and disconnect battery

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate solenoid valve

    Locate the Rear PTO Clutch Solenoid Valve. On most Case IH models, this is located on the rear left-hand top of the transmission housing or on the dedicated PTO valve block.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  4. Unplug connector

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the solenoid.

  5. Remove solenoid valve

    Remove the retaining bolts holding the solenoid valve to the transmission/valve block and carefully extract the valve.

  6. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM replacement solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran hydraulic fluid.

  7. Install new solenoid

    Insert the new solenoid valve into the manifold and tighten the retaining bolts to the OEM torque specification.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical harness.

  9. Clear fault code

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the tractor's diagnostic menu to clear the 5008 fault code.

  10. Test engagement

    Start the tractor and test the Rear PTO engagement to ensure the clutch engages smoothly and the code does not return.
