Case IH 5008 (2910.04) - DEC – DEC: Rear PTO solenoid circuit overcurrent

Issue description

The controller detects an abnormal current draw on the Rear PTO solenoid circuit, typically caused by a grounded wire or an internally shorted solenoid coil. It can also trigger if the system detects an open circuit or if the controller receives conflicting signals (e.g., both PTO On and Off switches are simultaneously on due to a short to 12V).

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Rear PTO Solenoid (often located on the rear left-hand top of the transmission). Look for rubbed, pinched, or melted wires that could cause a short to ground (0V).

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the Rear PTO solenoid electrical connector (identified in wiring diagrams as connector X278 or X159 depending on the model). Check for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.

  3. Solenoid Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the two pins of the PTO solenoid. A reading of 0 ohms (or significantly below specification) confirms the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: With the solenoid disconnected, check the wiring harness from the DEC to the solenoid connector for continuity to ground. If the wire is grounded while disconnected from the solenoid, the wiring harness is the source of the short, not the valve.

  5. Switch Verification: Because code 5008 can sometimes be triggered by switch conflicts, verify that the cab PTO switch and the rear fender PTO switches are not physically stuck or damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the Rear PTO solenoid valve on the transmission housing (typically the rear left-hand top side).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 2-pin female electrical connector from the solenoid.

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve to prevent dirt and debris from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Unscrew and remove the faulty Rear PTO solenoid valve from the housing. Have a shop towel ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.

  6. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic oil. Thread the new valve into the housing and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  8. Test and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the Rear PTO engagement. Use the tractor's instrument cluster diagnostic menu or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 5008 fault code from the DEC memory.
