Case IH 5008 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO solenoid - circuit over current

Issue description

The control module is detecting a higher-than-expected electrical current flowing through the Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid circuit, almost always caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself. Depending on the model and software version, it can also indicate that both the PTO 'ON' and 'OFF' switches are simultaneously sending a signal due to a short to 12V.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the PTO controller to the rear PTO solenoid for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas shorting to the chassis ground.

  2. Disconnect the PTO solenoid and inspect the electrical connector for water ingress, corrosion, or melted pins that could bridge the circuit.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the PTO solenoid coil terminals. A reading of near 0 ohms indicates the coil is internally shorted.

  4. If wiring and coil are good (switch logic error cause): Test the cab and rear fender PTO switches to ensure they are not physically stuck or shorted to 12V, which can cause simultaneous ON/OFF signals on some models.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for service

    Turn off the tractor, lower any implements to the ground, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate solenoid assembly

    Locate the Rear PTO solenoid valve assembly, typically mounted on the rear transmission/hydraulic housing.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the PTO solenoid.

  4. Remove retaining nut

    Remove the retaining nut located at the end of the solenoid valve stem.

  5. Remove old coil

    Slide the old, faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system to replace just the coil).

  6. Install new coil

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and securely tighten the retaining nut.

  7. Reconnect electrical components

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  8. Clear fault codes

    Clear the fault codes via the tractor's diagnostic display.

  9. Perform calibration

    On certain models (like the MXM series), replacing a PWM solenoid requires running a transmission/PTO calibration via the tractor's H-Menu (e.g., the H8 procedure) to teach the controller the new solenoid's current requirements.
