Case IH 5008 – Transmission Control Module: Rear PTO solenoid - open circuit or Rear PTO solenoid circuit overcurrent
Issue description
The controller has detected an electrical fault—specifically an open circuit, a short to ground, or an overcurrent condition—in the circuit that powers the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement solenoid.

Check the cause
Inspect Connectors: Locate the Rear PTO Solenoid (often designated as connector X278 or X279) and the Transmission Module connectors. Check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.
Test for Open Circuit: Disconnect the Electronic Management Unit/Transmission Module connector and the Rear PTO solenoid connector. Check for continuity on the power and return wires between the two connectors to isolate a broken wire in the harness.
Test for Short to Ground: With both ends disconnected, test the harness wires for continuity to the tractor chassis/ground.
Test the Solenoid Coil: Measure the resistance across the two pins of the Rear PTO solenoid itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (open loop) or an out-of-spec resistance, the internal coil of the solenoid has failed.
Check Fuses: Verify that the PTO circuit fuses in the main fuse box are intact.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.
Locate the Solenoid
The Rear PTO solenoid is typically located on the rear left-hand top of the transmission housing or on the rear PTO valve block.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic tests revealed an open or shorted wire, trace the harness and repair the damaged section. Re-pin the connector if the fault is at the plug.
Solenoid Replacement
Thoroughly clean the area around the PTO valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the solenoid. Unthread the retaining nut or mounting bolts securing the solenoid coil/cartridge valve. Remove the faulty solenoid. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic oil and install it into the valve block. Tighten to OEM torque specs.
Reassembly & Calibration
Reconnect the electrical harness. Clear the stored 5008 fault code from the transmission module. Depending on the model, you may need to perform a PTO calibration routine via the tractor's H-Menu or diagnostic tool before operating.
