5009

Case IH 5009 – Rear PTO Control Module: PTO solenoid open circuit or shorted to ground or AD12vs2 voltage is low

Issue description

Indicates a fault in the Rear Power Take-Off (RPTO) clutch solenoid circuit where the Low Side Driver is shorted to the High Side Driver, preventing the controller from modulating the PTO clutch solenoid and disabling the rear PTO.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235 - 340 Series 4)
  • Case IH STX Steiger Series (350 to 600 HP)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the AD12vs2 voltage supply to the PTO controller is not low (check battery and fuses)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the PTO controller and the Rear PTO solenoid (connector X278 or X-159) for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation

  3. Disconnect the RPTO solenoid and use a multimeter to check for continuity to ground on both the power supply wire (High Side Driver) and the return wire (Low Side Driver) to confirm the short

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the PTO solenoid to check for an internal failure (open circuit or dead short)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the CAN-bus modules.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the Rear PTO solenoid valve, which is typically mounted on the rear transmission/PTO housing valve block.

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or burning.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness (LSD shorted to HSD), trace the harness back to the controller, locate the damaged section, and repair the wires using weather-sealed splice connectors.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

If the harness tests good but the solenoid coil is internally shorted or open, unbolt the retaining bracket or unscrew the solenoid cartridge from the PTO valve block.

  6. Install New Part

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Thread it into the valve block and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the cab display or a diagnostic tool to clear the 5009 fault code. Start the engine and engage the Rear PTO to verify proper operation.
