Case IH 5009 (2910.06) - DEC – Transmission Controller / Driveline Electronic Controller (DEC): Rear PTO solenoid circuit - LSD short to HSD
Issue description
The system detects that the PTO solenoid has an open circuit, is shorted to ground, or the AD12vs2 voltage is too low. This condition prevents the transmission controller from safely engaging the rear PTO clutch.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO solenoid (often located on the rear top or left-hand side of the transmission housing) for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground or a short between the high and low side wires.
Inspect the electrical connector at the solenoid (e.g., 2-pin connector X-159, X-278, or X-287 depending on the model) for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the PTO solenoid coil pins. An out-of-spec reading (either infinite resistance/open or zero resistance/shorted) indicates a failed coil.
Verify that the cab PTO switch and the rear fender remote PTO switches are not stuck, shorted, or sending conflicting signals, as switch failures can sometimes trigger related PTO circuit codes.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the Rear PTO solenoid valve assembly on the transmission valve block (typically at the rear of the tractor, top or left side of the transmission housing).
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the PTO solenoid.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.
Remove the Solenoid/Valve
Depending on the exact part revision, either remove the retaining nut to slide the electromagnetic coil off the valve stem, or use a wrench to unthread the entire cartridge valve assembly from the transmission block.
Install the New Part
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic oil. Thread the new valve into the block and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification, or slide the new coil onto the existing stem and secure the nut.
Reassemble
Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector.
Test
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the inactive fault codes from the DEC/ATC, and test the PTO engagement using both the cab switch and the fender switch to verify the repair.
