Case IH 5010 – Rear PTO Controller / Tractor Control Unit (TCU): Rear PTO solenoid circuit shorted to B+ when PTO is in the off state.

Issue description

The control unit is detecting battery voltage (12V / B+) on the Rear Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid circuit when the PTO switch is commanded to the 'OFF' position. This means voltage is bleeding into the circuit unexpectedly, which prevents the system from verifying that the PTO is safely disengaged.

Check the cause

  1. Check if an external power supply or aftermarket accessory is connected and back-feeding voltage into the harness

  2. Verify the tractor's charging system is not faulty or overcharging

  3. Check the PTO solenoid itself for internal short circuits

  4. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation causing a short to power

  5. Check the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) for an internal fault sending voltage to the pin

Repair steps

  1. Test for a Short to Ground

    Disconnect the harness end connector at the PTO solenoid (e.g., connector C516). Use a multimeter to check resistance between pin 1 and ground, and pin 2 and ground. If a reading of less than 1.0 Ω is indicated, there is a short to ground. Repair or replace the wiring harness.

  2. Test for a Short Circuit in the Harness

    Check resistance between pin 1 and pin 2 on the solenoid harness connector. If a short circuit is indicated, repair or replace the harness.

  3. Test for an Open Circuit / Wiring Integrity to the TCU

    Remove the panel from the base of the instructional seat to access the Tractor Control Unit (TCU). Disconnect the relevant connectors (e.g., C060 and C065) from the TCU. Check for continuity between the solenoid connector pins and the corresponding TCU connector pins (e.g., C516 pin 1 to C065 pin 10, and C516 pin 2 to C060 pin 22). The expected reading is less than 1.0 Ω. If an open circuit is indicated, repair or replace the harness.

  4. Software / Module Verification

    If the harness and solenoid test okay, the issue may be software-related or an internal TCU fault. Ensure the TCU has the correct and latest software level downloaded.

  5. Clear and Retest

    Once the wiring is repaired or the faulty solenoid/TCU is replaced, clear the error code from the system and test the PTO for normal operation.
