Case IH 5010 – Transmission Control Module (Transmission ECU) or PTO Controller: Rear PTO shift motor – open circuit

Issue description

The control module is attempting to send an electrical signal to the PTO shift motor (or PTO engagement solenoid) to change the PTO speed or engage the system, but it detects no electrical continuity. The circuit is "open," meaning there is a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or the internal coil/motor windings have failed and broken the electrical path.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness running from the Transmission/PTO controller to the rear PTO shift motor. Look for obvious signs of rodent damage, chafing against the chassis, or severed wires.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the PTO shift motor. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or pins that have been pushed back out of the plastic housing.

  3. Resistance Test (Motor/Solenoid): Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins on the PTO shift motor/solenoid itself. A healthy solenoid typically reads between 6.0 and 6.8 ohms at room temperature (70°F/25°C). If the multimeter reads "OL" (infinite resistance), the motor/solenoid has an internal open circuit and must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the motor tests within spec, test the continuity of the wiring harness from the motor connector back to the ECU pins.

  5. Fuses & Relays: Verify that the switched 12V supply fuses for the transmission and PTO modules are intact.

Repair steps

  1. Safety Prep

    Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Ensure all hydraulic pressure in the transmission and PTO circuits is fully relieved before loosening any components.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the rear transmission housing around the PTO shift motor to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic/transmission system when the motor is removed.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the wiring harness connector from the PTO shift motor.

  4. Remove the Motor

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the shift motor/actuator to the PTO housing. Carefully pull the motor straight out. Take note of how the internal shift pin or linkage is oriented so you can match it during reassembly.

  5. Install the New Motor

    Lubricate the new O-ring/seal with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new PTO shift motor, ensuring the mechanical linkage aligns perfectly with the internal shift fork or selector mechanism.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

    Tighten the mounting bolts to the OEM torque specification. Reconnect the electrical harness plug, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  7. Calibration

    Turn the key on. Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic display (e.g., the "H Menu" on Puma models) or a dealer service tool to clear the 5010 fault code. Perform a PTO shift calibration if required by your specific model's service manual to ensure the ECU learns the new actuator's end-stops.
