Case IH 5010 - UCM – UCM: Rear PTO shift motor – open circuit

The control module has detected a break in the electrical circuit responsible for operating the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) shift motor. An open circuit typically points to a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or an internal failure (burnt-out winding) within the PTO shift motor itself.

   Visually inspect the rear PTO shift motor electrical connector for disconnected plugs, backed-out pins, or severe corrosion.

   Perform a harness continuity test by disconnecting the harness at the PTO shift motor and at the UCM. Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity on the signal and ground wires, and check for any visible wire chafing along the frame routing.

   Measure the resistance across the terminals of the PTO shift motor itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the motor has failed internally.

   Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the circuit is receiving the correct reference voltage and has a solid ground connection to the chassis.

   Prepare machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, relieve all hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental short circuits.

   Access the motor

   Locate the faulty rear PTO shift motor assembly at the rear of the tractor near the PTO output shaft housing.

   Disconnect wiring

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the shift motor.

   Remove the motor

   Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the PTO shift motor to the housing. Be prepared for minor fluid seepage depending on the exact mounting location; cap any open ports if necessary.

   Install the new part

   Mount the replacement PTO shift motor and tighten the bolts to the OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect wiring

   Plug the electrical harness back into the new motor, ensuring the connector clicks and locks into place.

   Restore power

   Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear codes and calibrate

   Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Access the 'H Menu' or use the Enhanced Keypad to clear the stored 5010 error code. Depending on the model, run a PTO shift calibration procedure so the UCM can learn the end-stops of the new motor.
