Case IH 5012 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU): Rear PTO 5012 PTO clutch is slipping excessively for the duration of 5 seconds or longer.

The Tractor Control Unit (TCU) continuously monitors the PTO clutch input and output speeds. This fault code is triggered when the difference between the input and output speeds exceeds a preset limit, meaning the TCU has detected excessive slip in the PTO clutch pack.

   Check the PTO load to verify if it is too heavy or if the PTO-driven implement is malfunctioning. Reduce the load, clear the fault codes, and retest.

   Check PTO clutch pressure to ensure hydraulic pressure is not too low, which would cause the clutch to slip.

   Inspect the PTO speed sensor, connectors, and wiring harness for damage or loose pins that could send false slip readings to the TCU.

   Check the engine RPM signal from the alternator to verify the control unit is receiving the correct signal.

   Preparation

   Switch off the engine and turn off the ignition.

   Access the PTO Unit

   Remove the PTO housing assembly from the rear of the tractor.

   Disassemble the Clutch Pack

   Compress the clutch spring (using a press or a specialized PTO clutch tool) and remove the retaining snap ring located above the clutch piston. Caution: The spring will expand to approximately 5 inches in length once released.

   Remove Worn Components

   Remove the clutch piston, the worn clutch discs, and the pressure plates.

   Install New Seals

   Install the new seals. Note that the 1000 RPM shaft seal installs from the rear/outside, while the 540 RPM shaft seal installs from the inside.

   Reassemble the Clutch Pack

   Install the new clutch discs and pressure plate. Ensure that the upside-down cup/spacer is installed "cup down" so it cannot slide past the ledge on the spool.

   Reinstall the Snap Ring

   Compress the spring again and reinstall the snap ring. This snap ring acts as a stop for the clutch piston so it cannot over-stroke.

   Reinstall the PTO Housing

   Carefully reinstall the shaft into the housing, ensuring the retaining ring is correctly placed in its groove to prevent misalignment or slippage during operation.
