5013

Case IH 5013 – Armrest Controller or Rear PTO Management Controller: Rear PTO shift switch – open circuit

Issue description

The controller is not detecting a complete electrical circuit from the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) shift switch. This is typically caused by a disconnected wire, a broken wire in the harness, a corroded connector, or an internal failure of the switch itself preventing continuity.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Rear PTO shift switch (both in the cab and on the rear fender, if equipped) for physical damage or sticking buttons.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the PTO shift switch to the controller. Look for disconnected plugs, backed-out pins, corrosion, or wires that have been pinched/chafed.

  3. Disconnect the switch and use a digital multimeter to test for continuity across the switch terminals while toggling it. If the switch does not close the circuit when actuated, the switch is internally faulty.

  4. With the key ON, check the harness side of the connector for the proper reference voltage (usually 12V or 5V depending on the circuit) and a good ground. If voltage is missing, the issue lies in the wiring harness or the controller output.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Switch

Locate the faulty Rear PTO shift switch (either on the right-hand armrest console or the rear fender panel). Carefully remove any trim panels or bezels required to access the back of the switch.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

Depress the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws holding the switch in place, and pull the switch out of its mounting slot.

  5. Install the New Part

Push the new OEM PTO shift switch into the mounting slot until it clicks securely into place.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the switch. Ensure the connector is free of dirt and seats fully.

  7. Reassemble and Test

Reinstall any trim panels. Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the stored fault codes. Test the PTO shift switch to ensure the PTO engages/disengages properly and that code 5013 does not return.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Rear PTO Shift Switch (Cab or Fender mounted)

Ensure you are replacing the correct switch, as the system differentiates between the "Rear PTO shift switch" (Code 5013), the "Rear PTO cab normally closed switch" (Code 5033), and the "Rear PTO fender switch" (Code 5034).
