Case IH 5014 – Electrical Power System / Distribution Systems: Rear PTO shift switch – short circuit
Issue description
The control module is detecting an abnormal electrical condition (a short to ground or short to voltage) in the circuit of the switch responsible for shifting the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) speeds or engagement. Because the circuit is shorted, the controller receives an invalid continuous signal, which disables the PTO shifting function to prevent mechanical damage or unintended engagement.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Case IH Puma 165
- Case IH Puma 180
- Case IH Puma 195
- Case IH Puma 210
- Case IH Puma 225 CVX
- Case IH Magnum 235-340
- Case IH Steiger series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO shift switch (both cab and fender switches) for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, or shorting against the chassis.
Disconnect the PTO shift switch and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit.
Test the switch for internal continuity. If the switch shows continuity (closed circuit) in the 'OFF' or neutral position, it has failed internally.
Test the wiring harness for a short to ground. With the switch and battery disconnected, measure resistance between the switch signal wire and chassis ground. Continuity indicates a shorted harness.
Repair steps
Depower the System
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any further electrical damage or accidental PTO engagement.
Access the Switch
Locate the faulty PTO shift switch (either on the right-hand console in the cab or the remote fender switch, depending on which one failed the continuity test).
Remove the Switch
Carefully pry off the switch bezel or remove the retaining screws holding the switch panel in place.
Disconnect and Replace
Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch. If the wiring harness was the issue (e.g., rubbed wire), splice and repair the wire using marine-grade heat-shrink tubing. If the switch is internally shorted, discard it.
Install the New Component
Plug the connector into the new OEM PTO shift switch and snap/screw it back into the mounting panel.
Test the System
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and clear the stored fault codes from the display. Engage the PTO shift switch to verify that the PTO shifts correctly and that code 5014 does not return.
