Case IH 5014 – Rear PTO Control Module / Tractor Control Unit (TCU): Rear PTO is commanded off but the PTO speed is greater than zero.
Issue description
The Tractor Control Unit (TCU) continuously monitors the PTO clutch input and output speeds. This code is triggered when the TCU detects that the PTO shaft is still rotating after the PTO switch has been in the 'Off' position for a specific duration (typically 45 seconds). This means the PTO is either being physically driven by an external force, the speed sensor is reading falsely, or hydraulic pressure is failing to disengage the PTO clutch.

Check the cause
Verify if an implement with high rotational inertia (like a large mower or baler) is attached, causing the shaft to free-spin.
Disconnect any implement, cycle the PTO switch to Off, restart the engine, clear codes, and test operation.
Inspect the wiring harness and 2-pin connector at the PTO speed sensor for shorts, corrosion, or swapped wires.
If the bare shaft is visibly spinning, check hydraulic pressure at the PTO clutch to see if the control valve is stuck open.
Repair steps
Rule out the Implement
Disconnect the implement from the tractor. Run the tractor, engage the PTO, and then command it off. If the shaft stops normally and the code does not return, the issue was implement inertia.
Test/Replace the PTO Speed Sensor
If the code returns but the bare PTO shaft is not physically spinning, the PTO speed sensor is likely sending a false signal. Remove the sensor from the rear PTO housing and replace it with a new OEM sensor.
Inspect the PTO Control Valve
If the bare PTO shaft is physically spinning while commanded off, hydraulic fluid is bypassing. Locate the PTO Control Valve Assembly. Remove and inspect the solenoid and valve cartridges. Clean the valve body and replace the solenoid/cartridge or the entire valve assembly if scored or damaged.
Rebuild the PTO Clutch
If the control valve is functioning perfectly and shutting off fluid, but the shaft still spins, the PTO clutch pack itself is dragging. This is usually caused by warped clutch plates or failed seals inside the clutch pack. Disassemble the rear PTO housing to rebuild the clutch pack with new seals and friction discs.
