Case IH 5015 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO fuse sense input – open circuit

Issue description

The electronic control module monitoring the Power Take-Off (PTO) system is not detecting the expected voltage on the PTO fuse sense circuit. An open circuit indicates a break in the electrical path, which is most commonly caused by a blown fuse, a severed wire, a disconnected harness, pushed-back pins in a connector, or a failed PTO relay.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Fuses: Locate the main fuse panel and check the specific PTO fuse (often a 7.5A or 10A fuse, depending on the model).

  2. Check the PTO Relay: Listen for a click when the PTO is engaged, or swap the relay with a known good one of the same amperage.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness between the fuse block, the PTO switch, and the PTO controller for rodent damage, chafed wires shorting against the frame, or pushed-back pins inside the connectors.

  4. Test the Switches: Use a multimeter to test the PTO engagement switch and the PTO brake switch for proper continuity and ground.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate the Fuse Block

    Open the fuse panel (usually located in the cab console or under the dash) and identify the PTO circuit fuse using the fuse diagram.

  3. Test and Replace the Fuse

    Pull the fuse and test it with a multimeter. If it is blown, replace it with a new fuse of the exact same amperage. If the new fuse blows immediately upon turning the key or engaging the PTO, you have a dead short to ground in the wiring harness or the PTO clutch coil that must be traced.

  4. Test the Relay

    If the fuse is intact, locate the PTO relay. Swap it with a matching relay from a non-critical circuit (like a work light). If the PTO now works, replace the faulty relay.

  5. Trace the Sense Wire

    If the fuse and relay are good, use a multimeter to check for continuity on the PTO sense wire running from the fuse block to the PTO controller. Repair any broken wires using weather-sealed butt connectors.

  6. Check Connectors

    Disconnect the harness at the PTO controller and the PTO switch. Inspect for corrosion or pins that have pushed out the back of the plastic housing. Clean with contact cleaner and reseat the pins if necessary.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect all components. Turn the key to the ON position. Use the tractor's diagnostic 'H Menu' (or a dealer service tool) to clear the stored 5015 fault code. Start the tractor and engage the PTO to verify the repair.
