Case IH 5016 (2910.11) - DEC – DEC (Drivetrain Electronic Controller): Clutch RPTO Solenoid - Generic error

PTO rotation (speed) is detected while the PTO is commanded OFF and there is no engine RPM (engine is off). This implies that either the RPTO clutch solenoid is mechanically stuck open/leaking, or the PTO speed sensor is malfunctioning and sending a false speed signal to the controller.

   Verify the Symptom: Check if the PTO shaft is actually spinning or locked up when the tractor is off.

   Inspect the PTO Speed Sensor: Check the PTO speed sensor wiring. Ensure the wiring is not swapped, chafed, or shorted to ground, which could cause a false speed reading.

   Test the RPTO Solenoid Wiring: Inspect the harness connecting the DEC to the RPTO clutch solenoid for open circuits or shorts to ground.

   Test the Solenoid Coil: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the RPTO solenoid coil to ensure it is within OEM specifications and not internally shorted.

   Check for Mechanical Binding: Determine if the PTO clutch valve actuator is mechanically stuck open, allowing hydraulic pressure to bypass.

   Power Down

   Turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and ensure the PTO switch in the cab is in the "OFF" position.

   Access the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission/rear axle valve block where the RPTO clutch solenoid is mounted.

   Disconnect and Inspect

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the RPTO solenoid. Clean the contacts and inspect for moisture or corrosion.

   Replace the Solenoid (if faulty)

   If the solenoid failed the resistance test or is mechanically stuck, remove the retaining nut/screws, extract the old solenoid cartridge, and install the new OEM replacement. Lubricate the O-rings with clean hydraulic fluid prior to installation.

   Address the Speed Sensor (if applicable)

   If the solenoid tests fine, the issue is likely a faulty PTO speed sensor sending ghost signals. Remove and replace the PTO speed sensor located on the rear PTO housing.

   Calibrate and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all harnesses. Connect the diagnostic tool (e.g., EST) to clear the fault codes. Perform an EDC (Electronic Draft Control) and PTO calibration procedure as outlined in the service manual to ensure the controller learns the new valve's quick-fill and current feedback values.
