5016

Case IH 5016 – Rear PTO Controller: PTO speed is detected when the PTO is in the off state without engine RPM.

Issue description

The Tractor Control Unit (TCU) continuously monitors the PTO clutch output speed. This fault code is triggered when the TCU detects rotation from the PTO shaft while the PTO switch is in the 'Off' position and the engine is not running.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series (215, 235, 245, 260, 275, 290, 310, 340, 380, MX180-MX305)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (350-600, STX500, STX535)
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check if the implement attached to the PTO shaft is locked up or back-driving the PTO. If it is, resolve the implement problem.

  2. Measure the pressure at the PTO pressure test port when the PTO is commanded 'On'. The expected reading is approximately 20 bar (290.0 psi). If not found, check the PTO solenoid cartridge operation and inspect for a sticking modulation spool.

  3. Perform a No-Load Spin Test: Disconnect the PTO shaft from the implement and operate the PTO system with no load. Observe the shaft's behavior.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect hydraulic system

If the PTO shaft does NOT turn during the no-load spin test, a mechanical repair is required. Inspect the hydraulic system for a sticking solenoid valve or sticking valve spool.

  2. Inspect mechanical components

If the valves are functioning, inspect for a leaking PTO clutch seal or a broken PTO shaft. Repair or replace the mechanical components as required.

  3. Inspect wiring harness

If the PTO shaft turns, or turns for approximately 5 seconds and then stops, the issue is electrical. Check the wiring harness leading to the PTO speed sensor for any signs of damage, shorts to ground, or swapped wires.

  4. Replace PTO speed sensor

If the wiring is intact, replace the PTO speed sensor.

  5. Clear codes

Clear all fault codes from the TCU and return the unit to field operation to verify the repair.
