Case IH 5016 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU): PTO speed is detected when the PTO is in the off state without engine RPM.

The Tractor Control Unit (TCU) is receiving a signal from the PTO speed sensor indicating that the Rear PTO shaft is rotating, even though the PTO switch is in the 'Off' position and the engine is completely shut off.

   Check if an attached implement is mechanically locked up or holding tension (back-driving), causing the PTO shaft to turn.

   Inspect the PTO speed sensor and wiring harness for internal failure, shorts, or swapped wires causing a false signal.

   Check for hydraulic pressure bleed in the PTO clutch circuit due to a sticking valve, which could cause slight movement.

   Isolate the Tractor

   Disconnect the PTO shaft from the implement to remove any external mechanical load or back-driving forces.

   Retest for the Code

   Turn the tractor's key to the ON position (engine OFF). If the fault code goes away, the issue was caused by the implement. If the code remains, proceed to the next step.

   Inspect the Sensor

   Locate the Rear PTO speed sensor. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, swapped wires, or shorts to ground/power.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the TCU is still reading a shaft speed greater than zero while the tractor is stationary and off, the PTO speed sensor has failed and must be replaced.

   Inspect Hydraulic Valves

   If the shaft is physically turning or under pressure when it shouldn't be, check the PTO solenoid cartridge and modulation spool. A sticking valve or spool will require removal, cleaning, or replacement.

   Clear Codes

   Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's display monitor to clear the fault codes and return the unit to field operation to verify the fix.
