Case IH 5017 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU): PTO clutch did not lock up after 6 seconds of clutch motion.

Fault code 5017 is recorded when the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) monitors the PTO clutch input speed and detects that the PTO does not reach its lock-up speed within 6 seconds of being turned on. Possible failure modes include: PTO load is too heavy, PTO clutch pressure is too low, PTO solenoid is not energized or is failing, PTO speed sensor or wiring failure, or hydraulic pressure is still present due to a sticking valve spool.

   Check if the PTO-driven implement is causing the rotation or if the load is simply too heavy for the clutch to lock up

   Test if pressure is present at the PTO pressure test port when the PTO is switched OFF

   If the test port reading is greater than 0, check the PTO solenoid cartridge operation and inspect for a sticking modulation spool

   Inspect the PTO speed sensor and the ECU wiring harness, ensuring connectors are connected, undamaged, pins are correctly positioned, and fit is tight

   Isolate the Implement

   Disconnect the implement attached to the PTO shaft. If the implement was causing the excessive load or rotation, clear all fault codes and return the unit to field operation.

   Test Port Diagnostics

   If the implement is not the cause, hook up a gauge to the PTO pressure test port.

   Address Sticking Valves

   If the test port reading is greater than 0 (zero) when the PTO is off, remove and inspect the PTO solenoid cartridge. Clean or replace the sticking modulation spool as per the hydraulic repair manual.

   Repair the PTO Brake Assembly

   If the test port reading is 0 (zero), the mechanical clutch/brake assembly is likely slipping. Disassemble and repair the PTO brake assembly. The brake friction plates and disc springs will likely require replacement.

   Sensor Replacement

   If hydraulic pressures are normal and the clutch is mechanically sound, replace the PTO speed sensor and repair any damaged wiring in the harness.

   Verify Repair

   Reassemble the components, start the tractor, and test the operation of the PTO. If the fault code does not re-display, return the unit to field operation.
