Case IH 5020 – CCH (Cab Controller Hub / Chassis Controller Hub): PTO is configured as a single speed and the shaft size frequency was detected when the PTO was switched on
Issue description
There is a mismatch between the tractor's software configuration and the physical sensor inputs. The tractor's software is programmed to operate a single-speed PTO, but when engaged, the control module detects a frequency signal from the shaft size sensor, which is designed exclusively for two-speed PTO systems.

Check the cause
Verify Physical PTO Configuration: Visually inspect the rear PTO of the tractor to determine if it is physically a single-speed or a two-speed (reversible/swappable shaft) PTO system.
Check Software Configuration: If the tractor does have a two-speed PTO, the CCH software configuration is incorrect. The module thinks it is a single-speed PTO.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: If the tractor is genuinely a single-speed PTO, inspect the wiring harness at the rear PTO housing. Look for a short circuit in the wiring that might be generating a false frequency signal, or check if a shaft size sensor was erroneously plugged into the harness.
Hard Reset: Disconnect the tractor's battery for a short period to reset the electronic control systems and clear temporary logic errors before proceeding to invasive repairs.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Reconfigure the CCH
If the tractor is physically equipped with a two-speed PTO, navigate to the CCH module settings in the EST and change the PTO configuration from 'Single Speed' to 'Two Speed.' Save the configuration and cycle the key.
Test Sensor Circuit
If the tractor is a single-speed PTO, use a multimeter to test the PTO shaft size frequency sensor circuit for a short to power or ground.
Repair Wiring / Replace Sensor
If the wiring harness is chafed and shorting out (sending a false frequency signal to the CCH), repair the damaged section of the harness. If the wiring is intact but the sensor itself is internally shorted and sending erratic signals, replace the PTO speed/shaft size sensor.
Clear Codes and Test
Use the EST to clear the 5020 fault code. Start the tractor, engage the rear PTO, and verify that the code does not return and the PTO operates at the correct speed.
