5023

Case IH 5023 – Rear PTO (RPTO) Control Module / Tractor Control Unit (TCU): PTO clutch lube solenoid circuit shorted to B+ [Battery Voltage] when PTO is in the off state. (4WD Only)

Issue description

The controller is detecting unexpected battery voltage on the PTO clutch lubrication solenoid circuit when the Power Take-Off (PTO) switch is turned off, indicating a short circuit to power.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH STX Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify power supply to check if an external power supply is improperly connected or if the tractor's charging system is faulty and over-voltaging

  2. Test the PTO lube solenoid resistance with the ignition OFF (should be 8 to 11 Ohms between terminal 1 and 2)

  3. Check the wiring harness between the TCU and the PTO solenoid for rubbed wires causing a short to battery power (check for +12 volts at TCU connectors with ignition ON)

  4. Test the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) for an internal fault sending constant power to the circuit

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Replace Faulty Component

If the solenoid failed the 8-11 Ohm resistance test, remove the retaining hardware holding the PTO lube solenoid valve in the transmission/PTO valve block and install a new solenoid. If the harness was found to be shorted to a power wire, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness and apply heat-shrink tubing/loom.

  3. Reassemble and Reconnect

Plug the solenoid connector back in and reconnect the battery.

  4. Clear Codes

Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the 5023 error code.

  5. Test Operation

Start the engine and test the PTO system for normal operation, ensuring the code does not return when the PTO is switched off.
