Case IH 5023 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO 5023 PTO clutch lube solenoid circuit shorted to B+ when PTO is in the off state. (4WD Only)

The control module is detecting battery voltage (B+) on the PTO clutch lube solenoid circuit at a time when the PTO is switched off, meaning there is an unintended short to power in the circuit.

   Check if an external power supply or jumper has been connected improperly to the machine

   Verify the tractor's charging system is not faulty or overcharging

   Check the wiring harness between the TCU and the solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could introduce a short to a 12V power source

   Ensure the connectors at the solenoid and the ECU/TCU are fully seated, not damaged, and that the pins are in the correct position with a tight fit

   Test the PTO clutch lube solenoid for an internal short

   If the harness and solenoid test fine, verify if the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) itself has an internal fault

   Visual Inspection

   Locate the PTO clutch lube solenoid on the rear PTO assembly. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the solenoid for any visible damage or areas where it might be rubbing against the chassis.

   Disconnect and Inspect

   Disconnect the harness from the PTO clutch lube solenoid and the TCU. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals. Clean or repair as necessary.

   Test for Short to Power (B+)

   With the connectors disconnected and the tractor key ON (PTO switch OFF), use a multimeter to check the solenoid signal wire in the harness for voltage. If 12V is present, the wiring harness is shorted to power and must be traced and repaired.

   Test the Solenoid

   If the harness is clear, test the solenoid's resistance with a multimeter to see if it has failed internally. Replace the solenoid if it fails the resistance test.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Once the faulty wiring is repaired or the solenoid is replaced, reconnect all components. Use an Electronic Service Tool to clear the error code.

   Final Testing

   Test the PTO system for normal operation to ensure the code does not return.
