Case IH 5024 – Rear PTO Controller, Armrest Controller, or ICU/CCU: Rear PTO shift - not calibrated
Issue description
The control module does not have valid calibration data saved for the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) shift actuator or clutch. Without this calibration data, the controller cannot accurately manage the engagement rate of the PTO, which may result in degraded PTO function or the PTO failing to start.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Case IH Puma Series (125, 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
- Case IH Magnum Series (MX series, 235-340 Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger Series (350-600)
Check the cause
Check PTO Selector Position: Ensure the PTO speed select switch/lever is fully engaged in a valid speed position (e.g., 540 or 1000 RPM) and is not stuck in neutral or between gears.
Inspect the Shift Actuator/Cable: Check the PTO speed select cable and actuator for physical binding, jamming, or disconnection.
Test the PTO Shift Position Sensor: Locate the sensor near the PTO actuator and verify the 3-wire harness integrity (good sensor ground, steady +5V reference, and valid signal return voltage).
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other active PTO codes (such as 5027, 5034, or 5035) that will inhibit the calibration process.
Repair steps
Attempt Automatic Calibration
The PTO clutch is designed to automatically calibrate when the PTO is started, rather than using the standard diagnostic 'H-Menu' system.
Perform the Engagement Cycle
Start the tractor and allow the engine to idle. Engage the rear PTO using the cab switch. Allow it to run briefly, then disengage. Cycle the PTO occasionally while driving the tractor to allow the controller to learn the clutch fill times and shift positions.
Verify Sensor Function
If the code immediately returns after attempting to engage the PTO, use a multimeter to back-probe the sensor. If the signal voltage does not change smoothly as the shift mechanism moves, the sensor is defective and must be replaced.
Clear Fault Codes
Once the PTO engages smoothly and the calibration is learned, clear the stored 5024 fault code using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop or via the tractor's onboard dot-matrix display by entering the 'H-Menu' (specifically navigating to the HC menu).
Parts you might need
(3)Rear PTO Shift Position Sensor
Generic part name; specific OEM part numbers vary heavily by exact model and serial number break. It is a standard 3-pin rotary potentiometer.
PTO Shift Cable
If the mechanical linkage is jammed or stretched, preventing the actuator from reaching the calibrated end-stops.
PTO Clutch Lubricating Solenoid
In rare instances on specific 4WD models, code 5024 can point to a low voltage/open circuit on the PTO lube solenoid, requiring a replacement solenoid coil.
