5027

Case IH 5027 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO 5027 Low side of PTO solenoid connected permanently to GND

Issue description

The ground-return wire (the 'low side') of the Rear PTO engagement solenoid is shorting directly to the chassis ground, preventing the module from properly controlling or modulating the PTO engagement.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Rear PTO solenoid 2-pin electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.

  2. Perform a harness short-to-ground test by disconnecting the harness from the PTO solenoid and testing the low-side wire (ground return) for continuity to the chassis ground.

  3. Test the resistance of the PTO solenoid coil itself to check for an internal short between the coil pins and the metal housing.

  4. Inspect the pins on the Rear PTO controller to ensure they are not damaged or internally shorted to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery if performing harness repairs.

  2. Locate the Rear PTO solenoid valve assembly at the rear of the tractor.

  3. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the solenoid.

  4. If the harness is damaged: Repair the chafed wire or splice in a new 2-pin pigtail connector using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors.

  5. If the solenoid is internally shorted: Remove the retaining nut or fastener holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge, slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem (or unthread and replace the entire cartridge valve assembly on older models), and slide the new PWM solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid.

  7. Power on the tractor, clear the stored fault codes via the cab monitor, and test the Rear PTO engagement to verify the repair.
