Case IH 5028 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO Clutch speed sensor open or short to Vbat.

This code indicates a circuit malfunction where the controller detects that the wiring to the PTO clutch speed sensor is either completely broken/disconnected (open circuit) or the signal wire is shorted directly to battery voltage (Vbat/B+). When this happens, the controller cannot monitor the rotational speed of the PTO shaft, which will typically cause the PTO to disable itself or fail to engage to prevent damage.

   Visually inspect the PTO speed sensor connector (C518 or C336) and the TCU connector (C060) for damaged wires, bent pins, corrosion, or a loose fit.

   Perform a voltage check: Disconnect the PTO speed sensor, turn the key ON, and measure voltage at Pin A of the harness connector. Expected is 4.5V to 5V max. If 12V+ is present, the harness is shorted to power.

   Perform a ground check: Measure resistance from Pin B of the harness connector to a clean chassis ground. It should read less than 1.0 ohm. High or infinite resistance indicates a broken ground wire.

   Perform a sensor resistance check: Measure resistance across the pins of the sensor itself. A reading of infinite resistance (OL) confirms the sensor has failed internally (open circuit).

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

   Trace the harness from the PTO housing back to the cab/TCU to locate the pinch point or break.

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the wire and re-test.

   Thoroughly clean the area around the PTO speed sensor on the top of the rear transmission/PTO housing to prevent dirt from falling into the housing.

   Perform this if the harness tests good and the sensor is confirmed faulty.

   Unbolt the retaining fastener holding the speed sensor in place and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new OEM speed sensor with a small amount of clean transmission/hydraulic oil.

   Insert the new sensor into the housing and torque the retaining bolt to factory specifications.

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks firmly into place.

   Turn the key ON and use the A-pillar display or a diagnostic service tool to clear the stored 5028 fault code.

   Start the tractor and engage the PTO to verify that the fault code does not return and the PTO operates normally.
