Case IH 5029 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO Clutch speed sensor short to GND (Ground)
Issue description
This indicates that the controller is receiving a continuous low or zero-voltage signal from the rear PTO clutch speed sensor. This happens when the sensor's signal wire is physically shorted to the chassis/ground, or the sensor has suffered an internal failure causing a short circuit.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Magnum
- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Steiger Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Farmall Series
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO clutch speed sensor for chafed, melted, or pinched wires touching the tractor chassis (ground)
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge connections and cause a short
With the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to test the signal wire in the harness for continuity to ground to verify if the harness is shorted
If the harness tests good (no short to ground), suspect an internal short within the PTO clutch speed sensor itself
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, locate the damaged section, splice in new wiring using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness to protect it from future chafing.
Sensor Replacement
Locate the PTO clutch speed sensor on the rear PTO housing. Disconnect the wiring harness. Unbolt and remove the faulty sensor. Install the new OEM sensor and tighten to factory specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness securely.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use the tractor's in-cab monitor or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 5029 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the tractor, engage the rear PTO, and verify that the PTO speed registers correctly on the dash/monitor without the code returning.
