Case IH 5031 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO 5031 Shaft size speed sensor short to GND (CCH Only)

This code indicates that the control system has detected a short to ground in the electrical circuit for the Rear PTO shaft size speed sensor.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness from the Rear PTO shaft size speed sensor back to the PTO controller for chafing against the transmission housing or PTO shield.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the signal wire to the ground wire.

   With the sensor disconnected and tractor powered off, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the sensor's signal wire (harness side) and a known good chassis ground to isolate a harness short.

   If the harness tests good (no short to ground), suspect an internal short within the sensor circuitry to its own ground casing.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and turn off the master battery disconnect switch.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO shaft size speed sensor, which is mounted on the rear PTO housing/transmission case near the PTO output shaft.

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic tests revealed a shorted wire in the harness, cut out the damaged section of the wire, solder in a replacement section, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink tubing.

   Sensor Removal

   If the sensor is faulty, disconnect its electrical plug. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place.

   Extraction

   Carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing. Note: Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic/transmission fluid may leak out.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Testing

   Turn on the battery disconnect, start the tractor, and use a diagnostic tool or the cab display to clear the stored 5031 fault code. Engage the PTO to verify that the speed and shaft size register correctly on the dash and that the code does not return.
