5031 - XCM

Case IH 5031 - XCM – XCM: PTO intention switch short to GND

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the signal circuit for the PTO (Power Take-Off) intention switch is shorted to ground (GND). The controller is seeing a continuous 0V (grounded) state on the switch's input pin, which prevents the system from verifying the operator's true intent to engage or disengage the PTO safely.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U
  • Puma
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the PTO intention switch (located in the cab console/armrest) and its electrical connector for physical damage, moisture intrusion, or corrosion.

  2. Disconnect the PTO intention switch. Turn the key ON and check if the active fault code changes from 'short to GND' to an 'open circuit' code (such as 5033 or 5034). If the code changes, the switch itself is internally shorted.

  3. If the 5031 code remains active while the switch is unplugged, use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance between the switch's signal wire in the harness and a known good chassis ground. A reading of near 0 ohms confirms a short to ground in the wiring harness between the switch and the XCM.

  4. Inspect the XCM/CCM harness connectors for bent pins or wire chafing, particularly where the harness routes near the cab floor or fender.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the trim panels on the right-hand control console or armrest to access the underside of the PTO intention switch.

  3. Isolate the Fault

Disconnect the wiring pigtail from the switch.

  4. Repair the Harness (If applicable)

If the diagnostic checks proved the harness is shorted, trace the signal wire back to the XCM. Look for pinch points or rubbed insulation. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Replace the Switch (If applicable)

If the harness tested good, the switch is internally shorted. Unclip the faulty PTO intention switch from the console bezel and snap the new OEM switch into place.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the switch harness and reinstall the console trim panels.

  7. Calibration/Testing

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON, clear the stored fault codes in the XCM, and cycle the PTO intention switch to verify the PTO engages safely and the 5031 code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • PTO Intention Switch / Rear PTO Cab Switch

Always verify the specific switch part number against the tractor's PIN/Serial Number, as Case IH updated the PTO intention switch architecture in early 2023.

  • INSTRUMENT CLUSTER; Assy, After 20th March 2023 (Post PTO Intention Switch)

    51580158

Depending on the exact build date, the PTO intention switch circuit may be integrated with the cluster assembly.

  • INSTRUMENT CLUSTER; Assy, Before 19th March 2023 (Pre PTO Intention Switch)

    51451233

Depending on the exact build date, the PTO intention switch circuit may be integrated with the cluster assembly.
