Case IH 5036 – Electronic Management Unit (EMU) / Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO failure to start

Indicates a fault in the relay or switch wiring circuit. The system has detected an anomaly such as the PTO relay coil shorting to +12 Volts, shorting to ground, or experiencing an open circuit.

   Disconnect the tractor's battery for a short period; this may reset the electronic control systems and clear temporary errors.

   Inspect the rear PTO switch located on the right-hand console inside the cab.

   Check the fender-mounted rear PTO switches (if fitted) for incorrect voltage or shorted wires.

   Test the PTO relay coil to see if it is shorted to +12V, shorted to ground, or has an open circuit.

   Inspect the switch connector and all terminal wire connections for faults, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Remove the rear PTO switch from the right-hand console.

   Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the switch.

   Inspect each terminal and wire connection carefully for any signs of a fault.

   Refit the connector securely to ensure a solid connection.

   Turn the system on to check if the error code (5036 / P36) is permanently corrected.

   If the error code still shows, substitute the switch with a known good unit.

   If the switch is not the issue, locate the PTO relay and substitute it.

   Repair or replace any damaged wiring in the relay or switch circuits as required.

   Clear the error codes using an appropriate diagnostic tool; if you lack the tools, seek assistance from a certified Case IH mechanic.
