Case IH 5042 – Transmission Controller or Rear PTO / Armrest Controller: Rear PTO management switch – stuck closed

The controller is receiving a continuous "closed" (engaged or ON) signal from the main Rear PTO switch in the cab. This condition is triggered either because the physical switch is mechanically stuck in the closed position, the internal contacts have fused together, or there is a short circuit in the wiring harness mimicking a closed switch.

   Physical Inspection: Check the Rear PTO management switch on the armrest/console. Ensure it is not physically jammed by dirt, debris, or a broken return spring.

   Diagnostic Menu Test: Enter the tractor's H-Menu (specifically the H5 Switch operation test menu). Monitor the switch state (often found on channel d44, d45, or d49 via CAN) while toggling the switch to see if the controller registers a change in state.

   Continuity Test: Turn off the tractor, remove the switch from the console, and disconnect it. Use a multimeter to test for continuity across the switch terminals. If there is continuity when the switch is in the "OFF" (open) position, the switch is internally shorted and must be replaced.

   Wiring Harness Check: If the switch tests fine, check the wiring harness between the switch connector and the controller for a short to ground or a short to a voltage source.

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Carefully pry up or unscrew the armrest/side console trim panel housing the Rear PTO switch.

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the back of the PTO switch.

   Depress the retaining tabs on the sides of the switch body and push it up through the console panel to remove it.

   Snap the new OEM replacement switch into the console panel.

   Reconnect the electrical wiring harness to the new switch.

   Reinstall the console trim panel.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition key on, and clear the stored fault codes via the diagnostic menu.

   Start the tractor and test the Rear PTO engagement to verify the repair.
