Case IH 5042 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Park Brake engaged when not in Park.
Issue description
There is a mismatch between the operator's command and the machine's sensor feedback. The transmission controller detects that the transmission control lever (FNRP - Forward/Neutral/Reverse/Park) is not in the Park position, but the instrumentation controller is receiving a signal indicating that the park brake is still physically engaged or pressurized.

Check the cause
Inspect wiring in the park brake solenoid circuit for chafing, shorts to ground, or open circuits
Test the park brake solenoid coil for proper resistance to ensure it hasn't failed internally
Check the wiring harness leading to the park brake pressure switch
Perform a plausibility check on the park brake pressure switch to see if it is stuck closed
Check the hydraulic check valve in the park circuit suction line (especially on Magnum/Steiger models) for failure causing regulated pressure to drop
Verify that the instrumentation (cab) controller is properly communicating with the transmission controller
Repair steps
Retrieve and Clear Codes
Enter the tractor's diagnostic menu (using the PROG/DECR keys on the display) to verify TRANS 5042 is active. Clear the code to see if it immediately returns upon shifting out of Park.
Inspect the Pressure Switch
Locate the park brake pressure switch on the transmission valve block. Disconnect the 2-pin connector and test the switch for continuity. If the switch is stuck in the closed position while the tractor is out of park, replace the switch.
Test the Solenoid
Locate the park brake release solenoid. Check the electrical connector for corrosion. Apply 12V directly to the solenoid to see if it actuates (you should hear an audible click). If the coil is dead, replace the solenoid.
Check Cab Switch (FNRP)
If the transmission sensors are working correctly, the fault may lie in the handbrake/FNRP lever switch in the cab failing to send the 'out of park' signal. Test the push-button switch for proper operation.
Recalibrate
After replacing the faulty sensor or solenoid, clear the fault codes and perform a transmission calibration procedure to ensure the controller recognizes the new component's valid range.
