Check the cause
Physically inspect the rear PTO fender switch for binding caused by mud, dirt, or debris packed around the rubber boot
Perform a system reset by switching off the engine and restarting the tractor to see if the error clears (if the switch was only temporarily stuck)
Inspect the wiring harness behind the fender for rubbed wires causing a short to power or a short to ground
If the tractor is not equipped with fender switches, verify that the 'Rear PTO fender switch option' is disabled in the XCM/Transmission controller settings
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental PTO engagement or electrical shorts.
Ensure the machine is completely powered down before beginning work.
Thoroughly clean the rear fender area around the PTO switch to prevent dirt from falling into the wiring connections.
Cleaning prevents contamination of the electrical contacts.
Reach behind the fender (or remove the inner fender liner if equipped) to access the back of the switch.
Gain physical access to the switch mounting and wiring.
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the faulty PTO switch.
Carefully unplug the connector.
Remove the retaining nut, clip, or clamp holding the switch to the fender housing.
For example, clamp part # 220416A2 on older MX models.
Push the old switch out of the fender mounting hole.
Remove the faulty switch from the machine.
Insert the new OEM PTO switch into the fender and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Ensure the switch is properly seated and fastened.
Reconnect the wiring harness connector, ensuring the weather-tight seal clicks into place.
Verify a secure and sealed electrical connection.
Reconnect the battery and start the tractor.
Restore power to the machine.
Test the fender PTO switch operation to ensure the PTO engages/disengages properly and that fault code 5043 remains cleared.
Verify the repair was successful and the code does not return.
