Case IH 5044 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO speed sensor - short circuit to ground

Issue description

The controller is detecting zero or near-zero voltage on the PTO speed sensor's signal circuit. The system recognizes that the signal wire is either shorted directly to a ground wire, shorted to the tractor's chassis, or that the sensor has failed internally and created a dead short.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO speed sensor for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause the signal wire to ground out against the tractor chassis.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the PTO speed sensor and check active fault codes. If the code changes from 5044 to an 'Open Circuit' code, the short is internal to the sensor itself.

  3. If code 5044 remains active even with the sensor unplugged, use a multimeter to test the signal wire for continuity to ground between the sensor connector and the CCM/TMF controller to locate the harness short.

  4. Inspect the pins on both the sensor and the controller connectors for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins that could be bridging the signal and ground circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off tractor

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the rear PTO speed sensor on the rear PTO housing (typically located at the rear of the transmission housing, behind the operator's cab).

  3. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the base of the sensor to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the transmission/PTO housing when the sensor is removed.

  5. Remove bolt

    Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place.

  6. Remove sensor

    Carefully pull the old sensor out of the housing.

  7. Lubricate O-ring

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid to prevent tearing during installation.

  8. Install new sensor

    Insert the new sensor into the housing and secure it with the retaining bolt.

  9. Re-attach connector

    Re-attach the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place.

  10. Verify repair

    Power on the tractor, clear the stored fault codes using the diagnostic menu or service tool, and engage the PTO to verify the speed is reading correctly on the dash and the code does not return.
