Case IH 5044 - UCM – UCM: Rear PTO speed sensor – short to ground
Issue description
The control module is detecting that the signal circuit from the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) speed sensor is shorted directly to ground. Instead of receiving the expected pulsed frequency signal (which indicates the rotational speed of the PTO shaft), the module is seeing a continuous grounded state (0 volts). This will typically cause the PTO to fail to engage or automatically shut down as a safety precaution.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the rear PTO speed sensor. Look for areas where the wire loom may have rubbed against the chassis, PTO housing, or moving linkage, causing the insulation to chafe and the bare wire to touch the metal frame.
Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor. Inspect the pins on both the sensor and the harness connector for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the signal wire to the ground wire.
Harness Short Test: With the sensor unplugged and the tractor key OFF, use a digital multimeter to check for continuity between the signal wire on the harness connector and a known good chassis ground. If there is continuity, the wiring harness is shorted and must be repaired.
Sensor Internal Short Test: If the harness tests good, test the sensor itself. Check for continuity between the sensor's signal pin and its metal body. If it is shorted internally, the sensor has failed.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
If the sensor is faulty: Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate sensor
Locate the rear PTO speed sensor, which is threaded into or bolted onto the rear PTO housing assembly.
Disconnect sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.
Clean area
Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the PTO housing.
Remove sensor
Unbolt/unscrew the faulty sensor and remove it.
Install new sensor
Install the new OEM PTO speed sensor. If it is a threaded inductive sensor, ensure it is set to the correct depth/air gap as specified in your specific model's service manual to prevent it from striking the internal gear.
Reconnect connector
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Clear codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and clear the UCM fault codes.
Verify repair
Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and verify that the PTO speed registers on the dash/monitor and that code 5044 does not return.
Trace wire
If the wiring harness is faulty: Trace the shorted wire back toward the UCM.
Locate damage
Locate the pinch point or chafed insulation.
Repair wire
Cut out the damaged section of wire and solder in a new piece of wire, sealing it with marine-grade heat shrink tubing to prevent moisture ingress.
Secure harness
Reroute or secure the harness with zip ties to prevent future chafing.
