Case IH 5046 – Main vehicle controller / dashboard module: Ground speed PTO switch short to 12V

The tractor's control system has detected that the electrical circuit for the Ground Speed Power Take-Off (PTO) switch is receiving an unexpected 12-volt power supply, indicating a short circuit to a power source.

   Check Diagnostic Channels: Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic display to check the switch's live status. In Case IH systems, this is often found in Channel 28 (X956 / CN4A) or Channel d48 (CN3B), which monitors whether the Ground Speed PTO is engaged or disengaged.

   Inspect Specific Wiring Circuits: Locate the wiring harness for the Ground Speed PTO switch. Test the following specific wires for a short to a 12V source: Wire 1: 2050AD (G) - PTO SUPPLY / DOG SUPPLY, Wire 2: 2055 (B/W/S) - PTO SYNCHRO GROUND SPEED ENGAGED.

   Isolate the Short: Disconnect the Ground Speed PTO switch. If the diagnostic channel still shows a short to 12V, the issue is in the wiring harness between the switch and the controller. If the short disappears when unplugged, the switch itself is internally shorted.

   Turn off the tractor and locate the Ground Speed PTO switch.

   Often located on the right-hand side top of the transmission or within the cab console, depending on the model.

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the Ground Speed PTO switch.

   Prepare for inspection and testing.

   Inspect the connector and the exposed wiring.

   Check circuits 2050AD and 2055 for melted insulation, corrosion, or chafing against the tractor chassis.

   Test the switch terminals for internal continuity faults.

   Using a digital multimeter, check for an internal short to power.

   Repair the wiring harness if damaged.

   If shorting to a 12V power wire, repair the harness using OEM-approved electrical splices and heat shrink.

   Replace the switch if internally shorted.

   Remove the retaining hardware, extract the faulty switch, and install a replacement.

   Reconnect the harness and verify the repair.

   Turn the key on, verify through the dashboard diagnostic channels (e.g., Ch 28 or d48) that the switch now reads correctly when toggled, and clear the 5046 fault code.
