Case IH 5046 – XCM (Multi-function Control Module): Ground speed PTO switch short to 12V
Issue description
The controller is seeing a continuous 12V high-voltage signal on the Ground Speed PTO (GPTO) switch circuit, meaning the circuit is shorted to power or the switch has failed internally.
Applies to these machines

- Case IH Maxxum 110
- Case IH Maxxum 115
- Case IH Maxxum 120

Check the cause
Access the Diagnostic Menu (H MENU) Channel 28 (X956 / CN4A pin 23) to monitor the live state of the GPTO switch. It should read 0 when engaged and 12000 when disengaged. A constant high reading indicates a short.
Locate the Ground Speed PTO switch on the right-hand side, top of the transmission housing.
Disconnect the switch and inspect the wiring harness, specifically Wire 1 (2050AD (G) - PTO Supply) and Wire 2 (2055 (B/W/S) - PTO Synchro Ground Speed Engaged).
With the switch disconnected, use a multimeter to test if the signal wire (2055) is shorted to a 12V power source. Voltage present indicates a harness short; no voltage indicates an internal switch failure.
Repair steps
Park and secure the tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Disconnect the battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during repair.
Locate the switch
Locate the Ground Speed PTO switch on the upper right side of the transmission.
Inspect the connector
Unplug the electrical connector. Clean the connector face and inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.
Repair the wiring harness
If the wiring harness was found to be shorted during diagnostics, trace the harness back toward the XCM and repair the chafed/shorted wire.
Remove the faulty switch
If the switch is faulty, place a catch pan underneath (as a small amount of transmission fluid may seep out) and unscrew the Ground Speed PTO switch from the transmission housing.
Install the new switch
Thread the new Ground Speed PTO switch into the transmission and tighten it to the specified torque (refer to the specific model's rear axle/transmission service manual for exact torque values).
Reconnect the connector
Reconnect the electrical connector to the switch.
Reconnect the battery
Reconnect the battery.
Test the repair
Turn the ignition key on, clear the stored XCM fault codes, and test the Ground Speed PTO lever. Ensure the central LCD display correctly shows 'GPto' when engaged and that the fault code does not return.

Specific CNH part numbers for this switch vary heavily by transmission option (e.g., 16x16 vs. CVT). Look up the exact part number in the CNH Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) using the tractor's PIN/Serial Number.
