Case IH 5099 – PTO Control System / Armrest Controller: Rear PTO management option not enabled

Issue description

The tractor's electronic system is receiving an input or request to use the Auto PTO / Rear PTO management feature, but this specific option has not been unlocked, calibrated, or enabled in the tractor's control module software.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Verify machine configuration on the AFS Pro display or Intelliview monitor to confirm if the Auto PTO management feature was purchased and should be active.

  2. Inspect the Rear PTO management switch in the cab for shorts (a switch shorted closed may send a continuous request to the module).

  3. Inspect the rear fender PTO switches for damage, moisture intrusion, or wiring shorts tied to the PTO management circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

If the operator accidentally pressed the Auto PTO button on a machine not equipped with the software option, simply cycle the key and clear the code using the tractor's diagnostic menu.

  2. Software Enablement (Dealer Level)

If the tractor is supposed to have Rear PTO Management, a technician must connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  3. Navigate to configuration menu

Navigate to the Armrest/PTO controller configuration menu.

  4. Enable setting

Change the 'Rear PTO Management' or 'Auto PTO' setting from Disabled to Enabled.

  5. Save and cycle key

Save the configuration and perform a key cycle.

  6. Hardware Replacement

If the configuration is correct but the code persists alongside switch errors (like 5042), remove the armrest console panel, disconnect the Rear PTO Management Switch, and test it for continuity. If it fails to open/close properly, replace the switch.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Rear PTO Management Switch / Cab PTO Switch

Ensure you are ordering the specific switch for the cab armrest, not the rear fender switch, unless fender switch damage is visibly confirmed.
