Case IH 51012 – AUX (Auxiliary Remote Controller): Aux Remote Controller failure - Valve Supply Relay Voltage High

Issue description

The controller has detected that the voltage on the circuit supplying power to the remote valve relay is higher than the acceptable range. This typically indicates a short to power (12V) in the wiring harness, a failed/sticking relay, or an overcharging alternator causing high system voltage.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX / TG Series)
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Check system voltage at the battery and alternator output while the engine is running. If the alternator is overcharging (15V+), it can trigger voltage high codes.

  2. Locate the remote valve supply relay in the power distribution box. Remove it and test for internal shorts or contacts that are stuck closed.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness running between the AUX controller, the power distribution box, and the remote valve solenoids for chafed wires shorting to a 12V power source.

  4. Disconnect the remote valve solenoids and check if the high voltage condition on the supply circuit drops, indicating an internal short inside a solenoid coil.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Locate the Relay

Access the main fuse and relay panel (power distribution center) and locate the "Remote Valve Relay" or "Interlock Relay".

  3. Replace or Swap the Relay

Swap the suspect relay with a known good relay of the same amperage from a non-critical circuit (like a work light). If the code clears and the remote valves function normally, the original relay is faulty and must be replaced.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the relay is not the issue, use a multimeter to trace the supply wire from the relay socket back to the AUX controller. Repair any sections of the harness where the wire has rubbed through and is touching a constant 12V source.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the inactive fault codes from the instrumentation display. Cycle the remote valves manually and via the automatic mode to ensure the code does not return.
