51029

Case IH 51029 – REMOTE (AUX) CONTROLLER: Valves supply voltage high before valve power relay is closed.

Issue description

The controller senses high voltage on the valve supply circuit before it has commanded the relay to close. This typically indicates the valve power relay contacts are welded/stuck closed, a short-to-power (12V) in the wiring harness, or an internal controller failure.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum series (MX Magnum)
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Maxxum series
  • Case IH TG series

Check the cause

  1. Relay Test: Remove the Valve Power Relay and test the switched contacts (pins 30 and 87) with a multimeter for continuity while unpowered to check if it is stuck closed.

  2. Harness Short Check: With the relay removed and the key ON, probe the load side of the relay socket for 12V to check for a short-to-power in the wiring harness.

  3. Controller Check: If the relay and harness are good, check the AUX controller for an internal short circuit sending voltage to the sense pin.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access fuse panel

Access the main fuse and relay panel (location varies by model, but is typically found on the right-hand console, behind the operator seat, or under the cab access panel).

  3. Identify relay

Consult the fuse box diagram on the panel lid to identify the specific 'Valve Power Relay' or 'Aux Valve Relay'.

  4. Replace relay

Pull the relay. If it tested faulty during diagnostics (stuck closed), replace it with a new OEM relay of the exact same amperage rating.

  5. Repair wiring harness

If the relay was good but a short was found in the harness, trace the wiring loom from the relay panel to the rear remote valves. Look for pinch points near the cab mounts or rear axle. Repair any chafed wires using automotive-grade wire, solder, and heat-shrink tubing.

  6. Reinstall and reconnect

Reinstall the relay, reconnect the battery, and turn the ignition ON.

  7. Clear fault codes

Clear the stored fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic display monitor.

  8. Test operation

Cycle the auxiliary remote valves to ensure the code does not return and the hydraulics function normally.
