Case IH 51042 – AUX (Auxiliary Remote Controller): Aux Remote Controller failure - Valve Current Limit Protection High
Issue description
The controller has detected that the current limit protection circuit for the auxiliary remote valves is reading abnormally high. This is typically caused by an internal failure within the controller itself, or by a severe short circuit in one of the remote valve solenoids that has overloaded the controller's protection circuit.

Check the cause
Check System Voltage: Verify that the battery voltage and the supply voltage to the remote controller are within normal operating ranges.
Inspect Relays: Test the valve supply relay and the interlock relay. Ensure they are not sticking closed or providing high voltage before the relay is commanded to close.
Test Solenoids: Disconnect the wiring harness at the remote valve block. Measure the resistance of the individual remote valve solenoids (raise and lower coils). A shorted solenoid coil (shorted to 12 volts or ground) is a common root cause that can trip the controller's current limit protection.
Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the Aux Remote Controller and the remote valves for chafing, melted insulation, or shorts to ground/power.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Isolate the Fault
If diagnostic checks reveal a shorted remote valve solenoid or damaged wiring harness, repair the wiring or replace the faulty solenoid first.
Replace the Controller
If the wiring and solenoids test within specification, the 51042 code confirms an internal hardware failure of the controller's current limit protection circuit. Locate the Aux Remote Controller (refer to the specific model's service manual for exact cab/chassis placement).
Disconnect and Swap
Unplug the multi-pin harness connectors from the failed controller and unbolt it from its mounting bracket. Install the new controller and reconnect the harnesses.
Restore Power and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the tractor's diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the inactive 51042 fault code.
Calibration
Perform the remote valve calibration procedure as outlined in the OEM service manual to ensure the new controller learns the correct flow and deadband limits for the valves.
