Case IH 5109-19 - VCM – VCM: Vehicle controller loss of communication with driveline controller
Issue description
The Vehicle Control Module (VCM) has lost its data link with the Driveline Controller over the CAN bus network because it stopped receiving expected data packets within a specific timeframe.

Check the cause
Check the battery and charging system for low voltage conditions (dropping below 9-10 volts during cranking)
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the VCM and the Driveline Controller for physical damage, such as chafed, cut, or corroded wires
Inspect the connectors at both the VCM and the Driveline Controller for moisture ingress, corrosion, or backed-out pins
Test CAN bus voltage (Yellow and Green wires should add up to approximately 5 volts) and resistance (approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with battery disconnected)
Use a diagnostic tool to check if other modules are also reporting a loss of communication, indicating a global CAN bus failure
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH EST or a compatible scanner to the machine's diagnostic port.
Read and Clear
Read all active and stored fault codes. Clear the codes and cycle the ignition key to determine if the 5109-19 fault is an active (hard) fault or a stored (intermittent) fault.
Resolve Voltage Issues
If low voltage codes are present alongside the communication code, replace the aging battery or repair the alternator/starter circuit first.
Repair Wiring
If the visual inspection or multimeter tests reveal a short, open circuit, or damaged terminating resistor, repair the CAN bus wiring harness using OEM repair connectors or replace the faulty terminating resistor.
Clean Connections
If moisture or corrosion is found in the VCM or Driveline Controller connectors, clean them thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.
Software Update / Module Replacement
If the wiring harness, terminating resistors, and voltage supply are all verified as perfect, check for available software updates (re-flashing) via the EST. If software is up to date, the Driveline Controller or VCM must be replaced.
