Case IH 51096 – Remote (AUX) Controller / TMF / Armrest controller: Aux 5th Raise solenoid failed open or short circuit.

Issue description

This indicates an electrical failure in the circuit controlling the 5th auxiliary remote valve's 'raise' (or extend/lift) function. The controller has detected that the electrical resistance of the solenoid circuit is either infinitely high (an open circuit, such as a broken wire or burnt-out coil) or abnormally low (a short circuit to ground or another wire).

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the 5th remote valve block at the rear of the tractor. Look for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, or rodent damage.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the harness at the 5th raise solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the 5th raise solenoid coil. A reading of 'OL' (Open Loop) confirms the internal coil is burnt out. A reading of near 0 ohms indicates an internal short.

  4. Harness Continuity & Short Test: With the solenoid disconnected, check the harness side for continuity back to the AUX controller. Check for a short to ground or a short to 12V power on the signal wire.

  5. Swap Test: If the resistance is within normal limits, temporarily swap the electrical connector from the 5th raise solenoid to the 4th raise solenoid (if equipped). If the fault code changes to the 4th remote, the issue is in the wiring/controller. If the fault stays on the 5th remote, the solenoid coil is the culprit.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Identify the 5th auxiliary remote valve slice in the rear hydraulic stack. Locate the specific solenoid controlling the 'Raise' function (usually the upper or specifically designated coil on the valve block).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove the Coil

    Remove the retaining nut or screw at the end of the solenoid stem.

  5. Slide Off the Coil

    Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge tube. (Note: If you are only replacing the coil, you do not need to open the hydraulic system, and no fluid will leak).

  6. Install the New Coil

    Slide the replacement solenoid coil over the valve stem. Ensure any O-rings or spacer washers are in their correct orientation.

  7. Secure

    Install and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge tube and cause the valve to stick).

  8. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the new solenoid.

  9. Test

    Start the tractor, clear the inactive fault codes via the cab display, and actuate the 5th remote valve to ensure proper operation and that the code does not return.
