Case IH 51122 – AUX (Auxiliary / Remote Valve) Controller: Invalid Software Instruction Executed
Issue description
This code indicates a software crash, memory error, or logic failure within the control module. The controller attempted to process a command or memory address that it did not recognize, which is typically caused by a software bug, a corrupted flash memory, or an internal hardware failure.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MX Magnum
- Case IH MX Magnum Series (MX180, MX200, MX210, MX220, MX240, MX255, MX270, MX285)
- Case IH Steiger / STX Series (STX275, STX325, STX375, STX440)
- Case IH TG Series
Check the cause
Power Cycle: Turn the tractor key switch to the OFF position, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back ON to reboot the AUX controller and potentially clear a temporary software glitch.
Check for Accompanying Codes: Check if other 'Invalid Software Instruction' codes are present (Codes 51119 through 51133 all indicate similar software execution errors on the AUX controller).
Inspect Power and Ground: Inspect the wiring harness, battery terminals, and ground straps connected to the AUX controller for corrosion or loose connections, as a sudden voltage drop or spike can cause a controller to miscalculate or crash.
Diagnostic Tool Connection: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) via a DPA5 adapter to communicate with the CAN bus and view the live status of the AUX controller.
Repair steps
Clear the Code
Using the EST diagnostic software, attempt to clear the inactive/active fault codes from the AUX controller.
Reflash the Controller
If the code is active and cannot be cleared, the controller's software is likely corrupted. Use the EST to reflash (update) the AUX controller to the latest OEM software version.
Recalibrate
If the flash is successful, you may need to recalibrate the auxiliary remotes and hitch settings, as memory data is often wiped during a software crash or reflash.
Replace the Controller
If the EST cannot communicate with the AUX controller, the flash procedure fails, or the 51122 code immediately returns after a successful flash, the controller has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
