Case IH 51124 – REMOTE (AUX) CONTROLLER: Invalid Software Instruction Executed

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the control module attempted to process a software command or logic sequence that it did not recognize or could not execute. This is typically caused by a software glitch, corrupted flash memory, a CAN bus communication error, or an internal hardware failure within the controller's processor.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • MX180
  • MX200
  • MX210
  • MX220
  • MX230
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • STX275
  • STX325
  • STX375
  • STX440
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285

Check the cause

  1. Power Cycle / Hard Reset: Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery for 10–15 minutes to drain residual power. Reconnect and check if the code was a transient glitch.

  2. Voltage & Ground Verification: Check the power supply and ground circuits to the AUX controller. Low battery voltage or a failing alternator can cause logic errors and processor faults in the module.

  3. CAN Bus Check: Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the CAN bus communication status to the AUX controller. Ensure the data bus wires (typically yellow and green) are reading correct voltages (approx. 2.4V - 2.5V).

  4. Software Version Check: Use the EST to check the current software version on the AUX controller.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

Connect the Case IH EST laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port. Attempt to clear the inactive fault codes. If the code clears and does not return upon operating the remote levers, no further action is needed.

  2. Reflash the Controller

If the code is active or returns immediately, the controller's memory is likely corrupted. Use the EST to reflash (reprogram) the AUX controller with the latest OEM software firmware.

  3. Replace the Controller

If the EST cannot communicate with the AUX controller, the reflash fails, or the 51124 code persists after a successful software update, the internal processor has failed. The Auxiliary Hydraulic Control Unit must be replaced.

  4. Recalibrate

After installing a new controller or valve manifold, you must perform the Auxiliary Remote Valve and Hitch calibration procedures using the EST or the in-cab armrest sequence (moving levers to extend/retract detents to learn the flow control limits).
