Case IH 5113-09 - DEC – DEC: Abnormal Update Rate on CAN VB1 Network from VIM
Issue description
The CAN VB1 (Vehicle Bus 1) network is experiencing an "abnormal update rate" regarding engine control messages from the VIM (Vehicle Interface Module). The communication link between the engine controller and the vehicle interface module has timed out, been lost, or is transmitting data at an erratic rate over the CAN bus.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect series tractors
- Case IH Steiger AFS Connect series tractors
- Other Case IH equipment utilizing the DEC and VIM modules on the CAN VB1 network
Check the cause
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic connector (CAN1/ISOBUS) to monitor communication traffic on the CAN VB1 bus
Visually inspect the CAN VB1 wiring harness between the DEC and the VIM for chafing, breaks, or pinched wires
Check the connectors at both the VIM and the DEC for loose pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress
Verify that the VIM is receiving proper unswitched power, switched power, and a solid ground connection (e.g., on the Armrest Control Module/VIM, check pins 1, 2, and 7)
With the batteries disconnected, measure the terminating resistance across the CAN VB1 network to ensure it is intact (typically ~60 ohms)
Repair steps
Isolate the Fault
Use the EST diagnostic tool to confirm if the 5113-09 fault is currently active or stored as a historical/inactive code.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal a bad connection or damaged harness on the CAN VB1 line, repair the wiring or replace the affected connector terminals.
Verify Power Supply
If the harness is intact but the VIM is not communicating, verify the fuses supplying power to the module (e.g., unswitched B+ and switched B+ fuses). Replace any blown fuses and test for short circuits.
Module Replacement
If the wiring, connectors, and power supplies are all verified as good, the fault lies within the hardware of the VIM or the DEC failing to process the CAN messages. Replace the faulty Vehicle Interface Module.
Configuration
If a new VIM is installed, connect the EST to the diagnostic port, navigate to the general configuration toolbar, and flash/configure the new module to match the machine's specifications.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes using the EST and operate the machine to ensure the 5113-09 code does not return.
Parts you might need
(3)Vehicle Interface Module (VIM)
4006919Some aftermarket/precision ag setups use Ag Leader Vehicle Interface Module PN: 4006919 (n-5143), but the OEM Case IH VIM must be sourced via the specific tractor's parts catalog.
Diesel Engine Controller (DEC) / Engine ECU
CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connectors
